Maximizing Facebook Games Without Compromising Privacy

Jul 28

I have noticed that a lot of applications, especially games on Facebook require or at least pushes us to add more and more contacts on our contact list. I admit that many games are very fun and addicting at most and it would suck to let that bonus period of free item pass. The only thing to get it is to invite a few friends to be a part of your game. Pretty wise on their part, but very annoying for most people.

You see, you cannot just add any random person to your game. They have to be your friend on Facebook for you to be able to do that. The issue is that most of us are concerned with the privacy of our profile information, pictures and shout outs. We certainly don’t want some random stranger we added to be able to see all of that info, right? The solution is by restricting a group of people from having access to your private information.  This can be applied on other things besides games and apps. Here’s what you have to do:

Restricting People From Viewing Your Profile Info

Go to your friends list. On the left side of the screen, you should see some menus including lists. Click the small link called + Create. A pop-up box should open. Enter the desired name of the group and click on all the persons you want to restrict from having access to your info. Hit the Create List button.

Next, go to your privacy settings and customize them. On each section of your profile, you  will see a drop down menu next to it. Click on that and choose custom. The custom privacy window should open and ask you to whom will you make that particular section visible. Choose which ones you want to be able to see that part on your profile. On the Hide this from text box, type the first few letters of the group you just created. It should appear in the list that will be auto-generated. Add a few more individuals if you want to block them from seeing your Facebook info and then save your settings. You can do the same for your photos.

Restricting Your Game-related Posts to a Group

As a courtesy to those who do not share your passion of playing your favorite Facebook game, you should restrict your wall posts only to people who also play the game, most probably the ones you have added into your newly-created friends list. But can’t they just hide the application from their walls, you might ask? Yes, but we’re just being polite.

Go to your application settings. Look for your favorite game; yes, the one that you flood your wall (and your friends’ walls) with posts of. Hit the edit settings button. On the profile tab, choose customize from the privacy drop down. There you can choose to make the game posts visible to certain persons only. Just follow the same step you did with restricting your profile, only this time you are allowing this certain group.

With these simple steps, you can maximize your gaming without worrying about your privacy. I know you want more members in some games and this allows you to do that. The next time you add another gamer on your friends list, you can just add them to your created list to restrict them from accessing your profile information.
